I started nara design after the birth of my daughter in 2008. I found it difficult to find warm clothing in Tasmania so I started to search for organic merino wool fabric so I could make my own clothes for her. I particularly wanted to make pants with booties.

I was able to locate the most beautiful organic merino wool fabrics (using Australian wools) and made her several pairs of pants, which she wore almost daily for the first 12 months of her life. The booties in the pants were particularly useful as I didn’t need to bother with socks, which she insisted on pulling off anyway!

From there I discovered more beautiful, high quality, organic textiles. And utilising screen printing and appliqué techniques, made a range of unique tops in a variety of plain and beautiful colours. One of my other motivations for making this line of clothing was that I often found it difficult to get clothes for girls that were NOT pink or covered in fancy motifs and brand names. I wanted plain, simple and practical clothing but still good quality and appealing.

Market research with mothers in the area gave me further ideas about what people were looking for. And I went on to design other pants, dresses and bedding for little people.

About 16 months on, and I with the help of my wonderfully talented and supportive Mum had enough stock to start trading. My first showcasing was at “the market” in Hobart, Tasmania on the 5 July 2009. I was delighted with the response from customers. So now, to show the rest of the world what nara design is all about, welcome to my blog!
